OPENING PRAYER

Loving God, come and speak to our hearts today. May we, like those on the Emmaus Road, find your words burning with hope in our lives. Strengthen us and give us courage for the journey ahead, we pray in Christ’s name. Amen.

SONG: Stay with Us

Ian Timmons

(Our various internet speeds prevent us from singing together, so please remember to stay muted on Zoom. Also, please delight your housemates by singing along with gusto).

Stay with us, till night has come: our praise to you this day be sung.
Bless our bread, open our eyes: Jesus be our great surprise.

Walk with us, our spirits sigh: hear our weary spirits cry,
feel again our loss our pain: Jesus, take us to your side.

Talk with us, will we behold a joyful life you will unfold:
heal our eyes to see the prize: Jesus take us to the light.

Stay with us, till day is done: no tears nor dark shall dim the sun.
Cheer the heart, your grace impart: Jesus, bring eternal life.

CALL TO WORSHIP *

Chris Christensen and Carolyn Rux

When astronauts first showed us our planet from the moon, they changed our perspective and our theology forever.
Turning and turning, our pale blue globe burns bright in the black spaces of eternity.

The Earth is the Lord’s, and all that is in it – all life embodied in the only home we know.

God created life in the oceans, and continues to nourish it with nutrients from the mountains.

Trace the course of a river to its source; stand among the mountains and marvel.

Who would dare defile this paradise?
Jubilation, exaltation, celebration, one and all!

Within the womb of the heavens, the Earth leaps to praise its Creator.

As the pearl necklace of planets swing around the sun, as the shining oceans embrace the continents, so do all living things praise the Giver of Life.

For God expressed a thought, and the thought took life.

God wanted to speak, and the Word became flesh and lived among us.

In that Word was holiness, the spirit that makes every life more than the sum of its chemicals.

From the tiniest plankton in the sea to the great whales, from the ants that burrow in the dust to the eagle that soars in the heavens – all owe their existence to God.

Fire and hail, snow and frost, sun and drought, wind and rain
– in God, all things work together for good.

Mighty mountains compost into rich soil;

fruit trees and maples aerate the atmosphere.

The dung beetle depends on the waste of cattle;

Birds and wind currents carry seeds to new orchards.

Not one part is cut off from God’s energy;

Everything has been equally created to live interdependently.

God scatters new life even among weeds and thistles;

And all Creation responds with rejoicing.

While it was still dark.
While it was still night.
While she could not see.
While she thought death held sway.
While she grieved.
While she wept.
While it was still dark
resurrection began.

Opening Prayer

Gracious God, giver of new life, we come this morning without our usual Easter banners and trumpets and choir, but with alleluias on our lips and hope in our hearts. We come to worship because we long to know again that Jesus Christ is indeed raised from the dead; because we hope that the resurrection will enter our own lives, to transform them, and we come because through Christ’s spirit we have been given each other to love. Be preset with us we pray, as miracle, mystery and the tender hands of grace. Amen.

We will share Communion

For this separate/together service you are invited to gather a few things for your table:

  • A candle
  • A flower, palm, fern or branch from your yard
  • A small amount of some kind of bread. Any kind of bread that you can break and eat.
  • A cup of juice or wine for each person present; grape or cranberry juice if you have them, but really any juice or even water is fine.

Set these elements wherever you sit for ZOOM worship. You might choose to use a piece of cloth or fabric as a table cloth; something that reminds you of a special time or place, or connects you to someone in the communion of saints.

Call To Worship

Howard Neal

Psalm 118: 1-2, 19-29

O give thanks to the LORD, for God is good; God’s steadfast love endures forever!
Let Israel say, "God’s steadfast love endures forever."

Open to me the gates of righteousness,
that I may enter through them and give thanks to the Lord.

This is the gate of the holy one; the righteous shall enter through it.
I thank you that you have answered me and have become my salvation.
The stone that the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone.
This is the Lord's doing; it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord.
We bless you from the house of the Lord.
The Lord is God, and he has given us light.

Bind the festal procession with branches, up to the horns of the altar.
You are my God, and I will give thanks to you;
you are my God, I will extol you.
Give thanks to the Lord, for God is good, for God’s steadfast love endures forever.

Prayer of Invocation

Compassionate God, the wind of your Spirit is life for all who long for you.
One breath from you and we are rescued from the arid valley of dry bones.
One breath from you and our hearts turn back to hope.
Let our whole lives be filled with this life-breath, this Spirit,
so that what now lies dormant may burst into bloom,
so that all that has been entombed by fear may emerge into new life. Amen.

Come to the Waters

“Come, Jesus is calling to you. Reach out, take my hand, you’ll not fall.
Come, come, I am waiting for you, o’er the waters of life, hear my call.”

“Reach out in faith, cross the waters to me.
Your hand in mine, that’s the way it should be.
Stretch out in faith, take my hand if you will.
Waters be calm! Wind be still.”

“Walk out in faith, take the risk if you can.
I bring you peace, come along, take my hand.
Step out in faith, I will carry you on.
You may be weak; I am strong.”
