Our Member’s Thoughts About
The Kairos-Milwaukie UCC Community

[On Sunday, April 15th, 2007, Chris formally became a member of Kairos-Milwaukie UCC. These are her thoughts expressed during worship on that occasion.]

Community is important to me. I have always longed to be a part of something greater than myself. In my youth, I was a member of several intentional communities, and more recently have been looking for the experience of community again.

To me, community means many things. It is a place where people are welcomed and accepted warts and all, and invited to challenge themselves beyond their often self-imposed limits. It is a place where people find satisfaction creating something greater than themselves, with others. It is a place where both joys and burdens are shared.

In addition, a faith community is, I think, a place where giving is joyful and compassion is holy. It is a place where we connect with the Divine in each of us. It is the place where we can grow in God.

I believe that Kairos-Milwaukie is such a place. During the year I have been coming to Kairos-Milwaukie, I have been welcomed, accepted, and invited to challenge myself. I have seen people quietly pulling together to share burdens and joys, give generously, and create something greater than themselves. I have been challenged by Rick’s compelling sermons. I have made a joyful noise with the Gospel band.

It is now time for me to make a greater commitment to this community. Today I take the step of joining my journey to yours. May our travels together be fruitful and may we all grow under the sheltering wings of the ever-loving God.
